History: here you go
Personality:On first sight, Dr. Hannibal Lecter seems to be an elegant, intelligent and refined man. And indeed, he has all of this qualities, as well as being one of the most brilliant psychiatrists working in the United States. Handsome, cultured and well-spoken, it is not hard for him to charm men and women into easily trusting him, a characteristic that serves him well for his practice.
But beneath this shiny outer layer lies a darkness that very few had a chance to even glimpse at. Hannibal is a serial killer who cannibalizes his victims. It is unknown exactly how many people he has killed, and he rarely follows a typical pattern as most serial killers do. His only trademark is that for every victim he takes at least one organ or body part he later consumes in elaborately made dishes.
It is hard to define Hannibal Lecter in a stereotype, since he is so different from everyday people, and even from other psychopaths. He is capable of committing terrible murders, but when he wants, he can function in a perfectly normal way, as described by the author of the books. While he's not strictly antisocial, he does have some of the features that define a psychopath: lack of empathy and remorse, usually displayed in the form of cruel cannibalistic puns and condescending remarks about other people. I have no interest in understanding sheep, only eating them.
Hannibal is quite renowned in the field of psychiatry, recognized and even revered by others working in his area, such as Alana Bloom. Even lacking empathy, he is able to gain insight and define the personalities of his patients, likely regarding most of them as uninteresting beings. Still, it appears that he has become quite wealthy from his practice, mostly from tricking rich patients into making him their heir.
His methods in therapy are not very conventional, and have been, at times, criticized even by his fervent admirer: Dr. Alana Bloom. However, Hannibal rarely takes the well being of his patients as his priority, being a cunning and manipulative man. Unknown to most of his colleagues, Hannibal uses his sessions to manipulate his patients to fit his own purposes, much like he did with Will Graham. He has also been known to easily make people trust him unquestioningly, part of his success as a serial killer, and it has even been suggested that he may psychically drive his patients to kill. It's also known that some of his patients have died during or after treatment, possibly attributed to manipulation by him.
In most senses, Hannibal is a refined man. He speaks fluent english, with a slight accent as it's not his first language, and a few other tongues as well. He enjoys classical music, as shown by his attendance to the opera, and he is particularly fond of gourmet food. Generally, he only eats whatever he has cooked himself, and he is quite skilled at this task. The series has shown him preparing different kinds of dishes from world cuisine, and his talent in this area has been praised by those who partake meals at his table.
Charismatic and elegant, Dr. Lecter attracts, men and women alike to his circle of influence. He is known to throw lavish dinner parties for those who consider themselves to be in his social circle. However, this is only an outer layer, rarely known to show affection or form friendships with others, as pointed out by his psychiatrist. An intelligent man, Hannibal is able to deceive others about his true nature, including other psychiatrists (Alana Bloom, Frederick Chilton and even Bedelia du Maurier for a time) and people working at the FBI (Jack Crawford and the Forensics Team). Few people have been able to see through the stitches of the person suit he wears, as described by his own therapist. As far as we know only Will and the serial killer Tobias have been able to, while Bedelia has often shown doubt and concern over some of his actions. Unfortunately, such glimpses of his soul generally come with a high cost.
Hannibal has few significant relationships in his life and most of them are rather unconventional, to say the least. The most important one would be with Will Graham. Upon meeting him, Hannibal felt a curiosity for this man, due to the Will's empathy gift. As they start to get to know each other, the two men find a strange kind of connection. But the "friendship" they share is highly unbalanced. Will confides personal pieces of information to the psychiatrist, but Hannibal doesn't reciprocate the intimacy. This allows the doctor to easily manipulate Will for his own ends, which as of yet are not quite clear. Hannibal appears to have some genuine feelings of affection for Will, but he's still capable of taking actions that harm the younger man, such as allowing him to doubt his sanity and framing him for murders committed himself. Hannibal knows will is unstable, essentially a good person albeit with many issues regarding his empathy and his abilities to socialize with other people, making it easier for the doctor to manipulate him. Something very important by this point is that Hannibal discovers Will suffers from encephalitis, but decides to leave it untreated due to his curiosity to see how it affects his friend, physically and mentally. The mirrors in your mind can reflect the best of yourself, not the worst of someone else.
Aside from Will, Hannibal is only close to his psychiatrist, Dr. Bedelia du Maurier. Though she once tried to cut their therapist-patient ties, Hannibal did not allow it. It is clear he only partially discloses his thoughts, concerns and issues to Bedelia, never allowing her to see more than he intends her to. Just as he does for Will, Dr. Lecter has a strange kind of affection for this woman, but his true intentions towards her remain hidden. It is implied that he might have sought to frame her for the death of a patient he referred to her, an event that left her emotionally scarred and unable to continue her career as a therapist, with the only exception of Hannibal. Bedelia is often concerned about Hannibal's actions and decisions, particularly regarding Will, but Hannibal rarely decides to follow her advice, having his own agenda in mind. It's nice when someone sees us, Hannibal. Or, has the ability to see us. It requires trust; trust is difficult for you. (Bedelia about Hannibal)
Among the FBI, Dr. Lecter is admired as a psychiatrist, after being recommended by Dr. Alana Bloom. Jack Crawford highly values his opinion, entrusting the care and mental health of Will Graham completely into his hands. Hannibal, for his part, often listens to Jack's concerns, not just about Will, but also the issues he has at home due to his wife's declining health. Though he's not Jack's official psychiatrist, he offers him advice and insight in more than one occasion. More importantly, Hannibal became Jack wife's psychiatrist, trying to guide her through the journey of her illness, cleverly hiding his manipulation of her. Will needs someone who can bring balance to an often unbalanced mind.
His other close tie to the FBI is Dr. Alana Bloom. Both of them have known each other for years, having acted as a mentor for Alana during her formation as a psychiatrist. She has a very high opinion of him, even recommending him to Jack, and trusting him almost without question on taking care of Will. Often they oppose on the views of therapies, with Lecter being more open to the unorthodox than Alana is. However, her admiration is such that she overlooks whatever misgivings she could have about Hannibal's methods. This suits the doctor just fine, making his protégée an easy target for manipulation, knowing she will be on his side, no matter what happens. Most psychology departments are filled with personality deficients. Dr. Bloom would be the exception. (Hannibal to Jack about Alana)
Hannibal makes no big pretense of keeping others at arm's length. It is not hard to engage in conversations with him, but he is always careful to keep from giving away any information about himself. When he does disclose anything, it is only the necessary bits to make people trust him. This is shown by his relationship with Abigail Hobbs, a young woman whose father murdered and cannibalized girls who looked like her. Hannibal cares for her well being and will protect her from those who seek to harm her, possibly including Will Graham. But as most of the people around him, he will easily dispose of her if required for his own purposes.
There is an important reason why Hannibal Lecter does not form close bonds with anyone. He is a serial killer and a cannibal. Until now, the series itself has not delved on the reasons why he commits these crimes. It is speculated that in a similar way to the books, Lecter suffered a trauma in his childhood that made him lose faith in humanity. In a general way, Hannibal kills and eats the people who have offended him in some way. As shown in some of the episodes, he keeps track of these people and when he wishes to try a recipe, he takes a look at the business cards to choose his victim, kills them, takes the organs he needs and displays their corpses in a cruel but artistic manner. At other times, his style mimics that of a serial killer actively being hunted by the FBI, such as when he killed two girls in a similar way to The Minnesota Shrike, or the murder of his colleague Dr. Sutcliff in the fashion of Georgia Madchen. Hannibal believes the world is a better and more beautiful place without his victims, and he is a man to who values aesthetics and elegance. And of course, it must be noted that those who get to close to discovering who he truly is become his victims as well. He has been know by more than one pseudonym: The Chesapeake Ripper and The Copycat.
Being in Teleios won't phase the psychiatrist as much as it may other people. Eternally curious, he'll try his best to decipher how this world works. He'll be most interested in knowing Will Graham is around and he will use the means he has at his advantage to manipulate the man. Initially, he'll be dismayed to know he has to share standard living quarters with three people, being used to a luxurious place back home, but he will do his best to procure his own house once he settles in. About his debt, Hannibal likely won't agree, as he believes that most of his crimes were rightful and artistic acts, however, he will play along with the rules of the place until he finds a way to bend them. He'll likely commit more crimes while in Teleios, making his debt climb, but he'll definitely try to be subtle about them.
Overall, Hannibal Lecter is quite a complex man, who only gives people a small glimpse of himself. Underneath the surface he is a dark and dangerous man, only visible to those daring enough to delve through the layers. But getting that close to him will likely not yield anything good.

Hannibal sits in his office after his first visit to Will Graham at the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. If he was his own psychiatrist, he would now ask himself how he felt about that. And he wouldn't know what the answer would be. For one thing, he's perfectly conscious he put Will in there himself, and he's quite curious what effect a stay BSHCI will have on his friend. On the other hand, he wonders if his office will be this awfully quiet for as long as Will remains locked up.
Just like Dr. du Maurier and him have discussed during so many therapy sessions, Hannibal is quite removed from the concept of friendship. In his mind, most people he has met during his life are not interesting enough to give more than a passing thought at them. But ever since meeting Will, he has realized that deep inside him was a need for a friend. Will was definitely much more interesting than anyone he met before, and he's the first person who can understand what he's thinking. Or at least has gotten close to it. There is still a short road Will must yet travel to truly understand, and Hannibal is more than willing to guide him through that journey.
Hannibal also knows that Will has it in him to become a killer. The psychiatrist has been dedicating his efforts during therapy sessions to bring out the darkness in his friend. Whether or not the seeds he planted will bear fruit remains to be seen. And that's where he debates if he took the right decision in framing him. As long as he's in the psychiatric hospital, Will has little chance to act on those impulses that will urge him to kill. Then again, it gives Hannibal more time to subject him to his influence, without Will being able to do much about it. But he knows that if he ever hopes to get what he truly wants, he will have to find a way to redeem Will from the accusations Hannibal himself set up and set him free.
